What is BioAcoustics?

The power of sound and intent appears to be the most ancient form of creation. Not only did sound create the universe, the universe is made of sound. Sound is nothing more than waves of energy or vibration that we can hear. Einsteinium/ Quantum physics tells us that all of creation is made of vibration or inaudible sound. Some things we can hear like wind and music but most things we cannot hear.

Large and small, everything has its own vibratory rate and sound. Many ancient scientists wrote about the ‘music of the spheres’. As measured by NASA’s Voyager probes: Saturn hums a slow, dreamy melody, Mercury has a chirping, quick sound, the Sun radiates eighty different overtones and the Earth’s note is a B, although some believe it to be an F.

Everything is vibration energy, inaudible or audible sound. Human beings are walking symphonies of sound; a gurgling or growling stomach; intrauterine sound; heartbeat, blood rushing. All frequencies and sounds combine so that we are a being of sound, composed of many tones. Our body’s shape, movements, desires, motivations, and wellness are determined by this inner concert.

Ernst Chladni, an 18th Century German physicist, was fascinated with the concept of vibration as he would experience it when he played his violin. One day he scattered grains of sand on a metal plate. He then drew his bow across the edge of the plate and watched as all the grains of sand danced. As he continued to play the same note he noticed something surprising. The grains of sand formed a pattern on the plate and it formed exactly the same pattern every time he played the same note. In trying other notes, the same thing happened, each note forming its own pattern.

This remained in the realm of curiosity until the 20th century when a Swiss scientist, Hans Jenny, played with the concept. With the assistance of the microscope, he recognized that the forms made by the sand resembled some that he had seen under his microscope: chromosomes, cells, molecules, bone tissue and crystals.

He then made several important hypotheses:
1. Growth is the result of vibration.
2. The nature of the vibration determines the resulting structure.
3. Each cell generates its own frequency and the combination of similar cells makes a new frequency that contains the original frequency or tone.

This was the beginning of quantum physics. The way something vibrates determines what it is. For example, the frequency of water is 18.02 Hertz which means that the water molecules vibrate 18.02 times per second. It is important to know the resonant frequency of things because then we can change its structure.

From a Sound Healers perspective, when we experience emotional or physical symptoms we are literally out of tune, or in dissonance. All living systems dissipate energy over time which causes us to move further and further from equilibrium. We can easily detect this in the form of uneasiness and minor discomforts. We can ignore them, or examine our lives to find where we are leaking energy too much. If we ignore the conditions, we will continue to move further out of balance and soon find ourselves in chaos with stronger symptoms.

Sound Therapy is finding the correct frequency and figuring out the best way to deliver the frequency for the desired effect. It will affect the physical, emotional, mental, and etheric bodies. There are also frequencies that can affect the sub cellular levels.

Through the work of Sharry Edwards, Bioacoustics, and the use of Voice Spectral Analysis, the frequencies that are most out of balance in the body can be shown. These represent muscles, biochemicals, hormones, vertebrae, toxins, vitamins, minerals, pathogens, and disease susceptibilities. By applying the correct frequency through a sub woofer, tone box and headphones, sound table, or transducer pillow, these imbalances can be brought back in tune.

There have been many remarkable cases where physical conditions that were deemed hopeless by traditional medicine standards were dramatically improved, including impossibilities like growing a new kneecap, strengthening damaged muscles, detoxing heavy metals, completely repairing bone fractures, and reversing macular degeneration. One of the unique and important aspects of Bioacoustics is its ability to show root causes and demonstrate that two people with the same disease can have very different etiologies.

As a sound practitioner I have seen improvements in digestion, thyroid functioning, emotional balance, lung congestion, allergies, metal toxicity, fibromyalgia, pain, anxiety, and cancer tumor reduction and cell counts. When one keeps in mind that all is vibration, then it makes perfect sense to apply vibration for symptom correction.

What Happens in a BioAcoustics session?
A typical BioAcoustics session consists of taking a voice print (speaking 45 seconds into a microphone attached to a computer program). The voice print is then analyzed to determine:
1. what things are out of balance in your body, and
2. what frequencies would be of benefit for you to listen to.

The next step is to apply the frequencies to your body. This is done on our special sound table. This table will give you your frequencies through your whole body by acupuncture points, bone conduction, skin, ears, and energy fields. At the same time, a CD is being made for you to take home and use.

How long does it take for a change to occur?
This depends upon how chronic the issue is, your intention to release the issue, and your compliance with the listening protocal.

How long are my sounds?
This depends upon each person. Sometimes it is 15 minutes, sometimes it is and hour.

How often do I use my sounds?
Each person is different. Most of the time you will be directed to listen to the tones 3-4 times a day. If the issue is chronic, you may be instructed to listen to the tones at night while you sleep. This is done by playing your tones through a subwoofer that would be in your bedroom.

How do I listen to my sounds?
There are several ways listed in order of effectiveness over time:
i.e., from most powerful to least powerful
1. sound table or chair (From $2000-$7000)
2. transducer pillow ($76)
3. tonebox ($400)
4. CD with headphones
5. open air speakers in room

Do the frequencies just act on the physical?
NO. As we cannot separate ourselves into just a body or emotions or mind, etc., the frequencies will beneficially affect all of us.
There are also some sessions where only the emotional is targeted as opposed to the physical.

How to Relax with Music

I just want to listen to relaxing music….but I can’t find any!

So many of my clients, when they lie down on my sound table, say they want to hear ‘relaxing’ music.
That is like saying, “ feed me something yummy”!

Given our high stress and busy lives, most people are running in high gear. Imagine a car tearing around in 5th gear. What do you think would happen if you down-shifted to 1st or even 2nd gear. Not a pretty sound.
This is just like taking a person who has been going at top speed all day (or even for weeks) and having them try to listen to some dreamy slow wave music. They won’t be able to engage.

So here’s the trick, which was formalized in the 1930’s by psychologists: match the mood, then gradually move to the desired mood. Massage therapists often voice their frustration when Super Person lies down on their table.
“They don’t like any of the ‘relaxing’ music I play, and it takes them the full hour to just start to unwind.”

The starting point is to rate your level of alertness on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most active.
If you are a ten, pick some music that is close to your level and that you enjoy listening to.
The next piece would be slightly slower in tempo, etc. It is all in the tempo or speed of the music. Always have it be slightly slower than where you rate yourself to be, otherwise you will find yourself maintaining your level of alertness, or even increasing it.

Be sure to pick music you like, or think you would like. Do you gravitate to jazz, blues, R&B, etc.? But don’t let that get in your way of trying something new.

If you are rating yourself ready for the big plunge into slow wave alpha or theta brain wave levels, here are some interesting albums for you that I use in our clinic. Not only are they designed to pull you down into the realms of peace and serenity, they are well composed by people who are seriously intent on assisting you to inner peace. These albums are not only beautiful but therapeutic.

Drumming - Documented Medical Benefits

Blood samples from participants of an hour-long drumming session revealed a reversal of the hormonal stress response and an increase in natural killer cell activity (Bittman, Berk, Felten, Westengard, Simonton, Pappas, Ninehouser, 2001, Alternative Therapies, vol. 7, #1)

Stanford University School of Medicine conducted a study with 30 depressed people over 80 years of age and found that participants in a weekly music therapy group were less anxious, less distressed and had higher self-esteem (Friedman, Healing Power of the Drum, 1994).

Subjects who participated in a clinical trial using the HealthRhythms protocol showed an increase in natural killer cell activity and an enhanced immune system. While this does not indicate a cure for cancer, such results may be of benefit for those facing this disease. (Bittman, Berk, Felten, Westengard, Simonton, Pappas, Ninehouser, 2001, Alternative Therapies, vol. 7, no. 1).

Alzheimer’s Disease
According to Clair, Bernstein and Johnson (1995), Alzheimer’s patients who drum can connect better with loved ones. The predictability of rhythm may provide the framework for repetitive responses that make few cognitive demands on people with dementia.

Parkinson’s Diseases and Stroke
Rhythmic cues can help retrain the brain after a stroke or other neurological impairment, according to Michael Thaurt, director of Colorado State University’s Center of Biomedical Research in Music. Researchers have also discovered that hearing slow, steady rhythms, such as drumbeats, helps Parkinson patients move more steadily (Friedman, Healing Power of the Drum, 1994).

Chronic Pain
Chronic pain has a devastating propensity for progressively draining quality of life. Technology and pharmacology are falling short of the mark needed to improve quality of life and reduce pain, according to Dr. Barry Bittman in the Pain Practitioner. (Lingerman, H. 1995, Music and You. In the Healing Energies of Music. Wheaton, Ill.: Theosophical Publishing House).

Strengthens the Immune System
Objective:To determine the role of group-drumming music therapy as a composite activity with potential for alteration of stress-related hormones and enhancement of immunologic measures associated with natural killer cell activity and cell-mediated immunity.
Conclusions: Drumming is a complex composite intervention with the potential to modulate specific neuroendocrine and neuroimmune parameters in a direction opposite to that expected with the classic stress response. (Composite Effects of Group Drumming Music Therapy on Modulation of Neuroendocrine-Immune Parameters in Normal Subjects (2001)Bittman MD, Berk LS,Felten DL,Westengard J,Simonton OD,Pappas J,Ninehouser MD; Alternative Ther Health Med 2001: 7:38-4)

Improves Mood States and Reduces Burnout
Hypothesis: a cost-effective Yamaha Clavinova-based HealthRHYTHMS Recreational Music-Making protocol reduces burnout and improves mood states in long-term care workers.
What we studied: At Westbury United Methodist Retirement Community we studied 112 employees’ mood states (POMS-Profile of Mood States & MBI-Maslach Burnout Inventory) including: tension/anxiety (T/A), depression/dejection (D/D), anger/hostility (A/H), vigor/activity (V/A), fatigue/inertia (F/I) and confusion/bewilderment (C/B). Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) is the sum of the above mood parameters weighing V/A negatively.
What we found: A 46% improvement in total mood disturbance, and 62% improvement 6 weeks post intervention. Economic Impact projections – a typical 100 bed long-term care facility would expect to experience an 18.3% overall reduction in employee turnover. Retention of 11 of 60 positions predicted to be lost each year would result in an average cost savings of $89,100 per year. Total annual savings to the industry based on an 18.3% decrease in turnover at every long-term care facility is therefore projected at $1.46 billion.

Mood Improvement & Burnout Reduction for Nursing Students
Hypothesis: a cost-effective Mind-Body Wellness Exercise-based HealthRHYTHMS Recreational Music-Making protocol reduces burnout and improves mood states in First Year Associate Degree Nursing Students.
What we studied:At Allegany College of Maryland we studied 75 first year associate degree nursing students’ mood states (POMS-Profile of Mood States & MBI-Maslach Burnout Inventory) including: tension/anxiety, depression/dejection, anger/hostility, vigor/activity, fatigue/inertia and confusion/bewilderment. Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) is the sum of the above mood parameters weighing V/A negatively.
What we found: A 28.1% improvement in total mood disturbance. Economic Impact projections – a typical 105 -student program would expect to retain 2 additional students each year. This improvement in retention rates would result in a projected annual savings of $29.1 million to US Nursing Schools. Extending this analysis to the healthcare arena, these projected retention improvements could result in cost savings of $322,000 for the typical acute care hospital, and more than 1.5 billion for the US healthcare industry. Reverses Stress on the Genomic Level
MEADVILLE, PA—A groundbreaking study published in the February 2005 issue of the international research journal Medical Science Monitor shows for the first time that playing a musical instrument can reverse multiple components of the human stress response on the genomic level. The study’s principal investigator, Barry Bittman, M.D. of the Mind-Body Wellness Center in Meadville, PA, says these unique findings not only shed new light on the value of active music participation, but also extend our understanding of individualized human biological stress responses on an unprecedented level. Suzanne is an amazing teacher who co-creates with Spirit from her heart. Sharing her knowledge, having fun, and helping others to open to their many possibilities makes her one of the best. Hazel Teague, RN, BSN, Townsend TN

Suzanne has a unique approach to getting the mind body and spirit in line and allowing balance to enhance my daily life.
She is quick to focus on the problem wasting no time. I am amazed at how instant the results are.
Her healing techniques come from her soul which is the reason for it being so affective. She lives what she gives. This is a very deep experience that is not a waste of time or money.
It pulls you out of a deep sleep and gives life more awareness. It heals the soul of old feelings we cling to, useless fears, needless insecurities allowing us to get out there and live and feel and
celebrate life.
She does not focus on any one religion. This spiritual healing is incompassing of all faiths. It is respectful of our personal values and beliefs. It is also very respectful of the body allowing it to
unify with the mind and spirit bringing the total person together.
Any problems or goals we want to achieve will happen naturally without effort after experiencing the healing Suzanne has mastered so intensely.
Her respect, sensitiviy and sincerity is the root of her healing guiding abilities.
To experience this just once will stay with you the rest of your life.
Deborah Young-Weiler, Concert pianist and recording artist, Vermont

I have known Dr. Jonas as a friend and colleague for approximately 20 years. We worked together in a traditional medical setting where she used her considerable healing gifts in both group and individual therapies. She was the impetus for miraculous transformations in her patients. She was also a wise and insightful colleague.
Dr. Jonas can engage with a wide range of people due to her humor and warmth. She can quickly discern what someone needs to work on often before he knows it himself. She can then facilitate the individual’s making the shift using her repertoire of music, sound therapy and psychotherapy. She has a transformative presence in her capacity as a therapist, colleague and friend.

Eight years ago my son was just coming out of a six week coma after a traumatic brain injury. I wish I had known of your work while he was in the hospital. Families having a loved one in a coma, wanting to touch & know how to communicate somehow could be so helped, feel encouraged and useful if they were made aware of the approach & attitudes in your book, ‘Take 2 CDs..’.
Speech therapists and nurses should have to know what is in your book and make more suggestions to survivors. Your training could be the highlight at major conferences on treating brain injury!

Personal Frequencies

All living systems have a signature sound and emit frequencies. The signature sound is the frequency at which the organism vibrates and which keeps it in tune. This includes vitamins, minerals, enzymes, muscles, vertebrae, hormones, plants, animals, etc.

Over time we usually move further and further from equilibrium. We can easily detect this in the form of uneasiness and minor discomforts. If we ignore the conditions, we will continue to move further out of balance and soon find ourselves in chaos with stronger symptoms like heart disease, gastric diseases, and joint disorders.

We can influence or re-balance out of tune organisms with the application of the appropriate frequency. By use of the law of entrainment in physics, the out of tune part, one that has either decreased or increased in frequency, can be brought back into tune. These are audible frequencies that are delivered through the vibro-acoustic table or chair in the office, CD and headphones or transducer pillow at home.

Science & Intuition meet in finding the frequencies that are best for you to bring your Being back into tune.

Suzanne Jonas, Ed.D. psychotherapist and sound therapist, and Frankie Z Avery, medical intuitive, compose a series of personal frequencies specifically for you.

Personal Healing CD - These are frequencies that you need right now to bring your body back into tune. Depending upon how out of tune you are affects how long it will take to re-balance. Your personal CD may be 30 minutes or as long as 60 minutes and will have specific listening recommendations.

Birth Note CD – We are all born with a set of notes that assist us in staying healthy, on track, and moving forward. Depending upon the amount of unresolved traumas in our lives, we may have diminished our original note. The frequencies on this CD assist in resetting your notes. These notes are personal to you and are configured to help you in your present state to raise your vibrational level to its optimum for this life.

What is the process to get my CD? First, You will fill out a short questionnaire. Upon reviewing this, you will be contacted by Dr. Jonas for any further information including credit card number.

What is the cost? The cost of each CD is $200. This includes shipping. It can be paid by credit card or check.

What will I hear on the CD? Each CD, of course, will be different in how it sounds. Essentially it will be a series of tones which can range from very very low to medium in range.

How do I use it? There will be specific instructions with each CD. This can range from listening once a day to several times per day. It will be important to listen through headphones or a transducer pillow. (this can be purchased at

How long before I feel a change? Every body is different, so it is impossible to predict. Most of the time the change will be gradual, as we don’t want to ‘blast’ your system with strong frequencies which would cause too fast a change and result in possible discomfort. Change is also dependent upon your motivation and how well you follow the listening directions.

CD Testamonials

In the course of two months I was in the emergency room twice and also hospitalized for 4 days. I had almost every test you can think of and still no firm diagnosis…pills did not solve the problem…The very first day with the Digest Aid CD I started to notice that I was feeling better, not as uncomfortable after I ate…Now back to normal, its very interesting to me because it happened very quickly. Now I just listen to the CD in my car while I am driving a few minutes a day…It really is amazing. Jeanne, CA/Atlanta

Whenever I have lower back pain I put on Muscle Ease. Within 10 minutes the pain is easing away. I have also tried playing it as background in my office. I notice less tension building in my body. Ellen Eikens, Mass.

I could hardly walk on Friday. I listened to Spinal Ease all weekend. By Monday I was just about ready to dance! Beth C., Tenn.

When I come in from work my shoulders ache so, I put on EthericSweep. I feel release in my muscles immediately. It is like having a massage. Thank you! F.L., Knoxville TN

I used to wake up with full-blown panic attacks. When I use Etheric Sweep every night I don’t wake up with my usual anxieties. Karen Brackett, Townsend TN

I have a muscle movement disorder that I have been living with for over 35 years called Dystonia. This creates continuous muscle tension, acute spasms and pain throughout my body. I have been using Suzanne Jonas’s Muscle Ease CD, either through our Tactile Sound Table or with our Transducer Pillow, almost daily for the last nine months. It has brought wonderful relief to the muscle tension and pain, allowing me to move easier and get on with my day. It has been exceptionally beneficial during the gardening season.
Thank you Suzanne!

I own an assortment of ten CDs produced by Suzanne Jonas and have found each to be a valuable and effective healing tool. Janet Flynn, Tulsa, OK

I have purchased all of Dr Susan Jonas CD’s and listened to them and let my family and friends listen to them. Listening to Dr Jonas voice and CD’s has such a healing and calming effect that at time I felt I want to listen to them again and again and benefit from it each time.
Bita Rahmanian, MPH, D. Hom., Knoxville TN

I have purchased most of [her] frequency cds and wish there were more. I have had so much success in different areas using [the] frequencies. To begin with… Digest Aid is without doubt my fool proof remedy for any gastric distress. The first few times I got relief I attributed it to pure coincidence…I’m a born skeptic but am always willing to try new things. Well after using Digest aid countless times with sucess time after time I no longer doubt it’s
effectiveness. I use it like other people use Pepto Bismol.
I use the Oxygenator before I exercise or when I’m just plain anxious and breathing improperly. I can feel my breathing slow down and get deeper.I love it.
Muscle Ease and Spinal Ease have helped my dog tremendously. I use the cds via a vibroacoustic pillow and pump the sound into my dog’s body. He is so soothed by it.
With gratitude
Joanne Figarola, R.N. Bethesda MD

I have used two of the binaural beat CDs and my patients have remarked how relaxed and how something seemed a “little different” with this massage. I got into a discussion with them about the music and one stated how many colors she was seeing during the massage, and another remarked having some really clear thoughts at the end of the session. Thank you for recommending them.
Maureen Bottiglieri, LMT, Valley Hospital Ridgewood NJ

Suzanne is a wonderful speaker who holds your attention with the most interesting stories and information about her work. I have used one of her meditation CD’s [Blessings] and there is something in her voice that tells you she is at peace. So while listening, the listener receives that peace as she speaks. Suzanne can help anyone find that peace within themselves with the work that she does.
Paula Perkins, Colon Hydrotherapist, Knoxville, TN

My daughter, Laurie, is in another flare-up of Crohn’s Disease. She has used the Crohn’s CD on the sound table once since she arrived here from Key West. Since playing Crohn’s frequencies, she is improving and will continue the CD on the sound table.

Have also been using the Multiple Sclerosis CD for an MS patient who comes in weekly. She says she feels better but is not quite sure why. I have noted, as her massage therapist, that while using the MS CD, she is experiencing less muscle cramps in her legs and feet and a more relaxed attitude during the massage.

I love the Well-Being CD for myself and for my pregnant ladies. The first time I used the Well-Being, I had been tired and a little down. After using the CD on the sound table, I felt a sense of being uplifted and peaceful. I listen to music and CD’s all day but really noticed the sense of feeling well after the CD. One patient who is pregnant loves the CD and the feeling she has afterward.

I have used the Knee-Aid frequencies on the sound table for several patients including myself with great success and relief of knee pain. I had been moving some things around at work and twisted my knee. I played the Knee-Aid and within the hour the pain stopped. The pain has returned several times but I play the Knee-Aid and the pain stops.
Linda Metzger, LMT. Ft. Lauderdale, FL

My son invited me to an Open House at Inner Harmony about a year ago because I have fibromyalgia. It was incredible. At the Open House I received a foot massage, essential oils, sound therapy and just an all around pleasant experience. I then attended Dr Jonas’ four week fibromyalgia class which had more in depth lessons on foot massage, nutrition, biofeedback and general relaxation techniques. Because of what I learned at Inner Harmony, I feel better. I use the Sound Therapy CD Fibro Ease at least once a night to relax, along with lavender essential oils and other relaxation techniques. It was a fantastic experience and you will make new friends as well.
